Media Development and Freedom of Expression

The promotion of freedom of expression is a fundamental principle for knowledge societies applying to both traditional and new media and cutting across all UNESCO’s areas of competence.

freedom_information_160.jpg
With an expanding media worldwide and with the increasing use of new information and communication technologies it is important to develop an awareness of, and a debate about, the media's effects upon society and its role within it.

UNESCO fosters community access to information with a view to facilitate “voice” of the marginalized groups in development discourse, and their active participation in the management of social transformations.

Projects
  • Reinforcing public awareness of tools and bodies guaranteeing the application of freedom of expression and access to information
  • Partnerships for Communication and Media Development
  • Reinforcing the Journalism Curriculum of Potential Centers of Excellence in Journalism Training in Africa
