Media Development and Freedom of Expression
The promotion of freedom of expression is a fundamental principle for knowledge societies applying to both traditional and new media and cutting across all UNESCO’s areas of competence.
|
With an expanding media worldwide and with the increasing use of new information and communication technologies it is important to develop an awareness of, and a debate about, the media's effects upon society and its role within it.
UNESCO fosters community access to information with a view to facilitate “voice” of the marginalized groups in development discourse, and their active participation in the management of social transformations.

31 May 2012 Workshop on reporting the science of Climate Change for South African journalists CSIR With South Africa at the cutting edge of global science events – such as being awarded the Square Kilometre Array (SKA) and participating in Rio+20 in June – Tshwane University of Technology (TUT) and the Applied Centre for Climate and Earth Systems Science (ACCESS) will host the first in a series of workshops between scientists and journalists to inform the general public on science-related news that have an impact on their and the planet’s future. 02 Apr 2012 Idasa surveys HIV and AIDS teaching in four South African journalism education institutions IDASA-GAP African Democracy Institute Idasa has completed an assessment on how HIV and AIDS and other development issues feature in journalism curricula at four academic institutions in South Africa. Commissioned by UNESCO and implemented by the Governance and AIDS Programme at Idasa (Idasa-GAP), the assessment explored the way in which journalism teaching prepares journalists for covering the content and the nature of development issues including HIV. (Idasa-GAP) has completed interviews with key respondents and focus group discussions with students at four Journalism Schools in South Africa as part of an assessment of how HIV/AIDS and other development issues are incorporated in journalism curricula. The assessment commissioned by UNESCO and supported by Sida and Norad, included Rhodes University, Stellenbosch University, Tshwane University of Technology and Walter Sisulu University. More |

07 Dec 2010 Training of Lesotho Media as partners in Education for Sustainable Development UNESCO Office in Windhoek The Lesotho National Commission for UNESCO and UNESCO Office Windhoek will hold a series of workshops focused on Educating media on Education for Sustainable Development (ESD). The first workshop that will identify priority actions to strengthen media as partners in ESD will take place on 11 November 2010 and a second three-day workshop from 8 to 10 December 2010 will focus on effective reporting on Education for Sustainable Development. 21 Oct 2010 Idasa-GAP and UNESCO develop tools for assessing approaches to HIV and AIDS coverage in journalism education Idasa-GAP The Governance and AIDS Programme of the Africa Democracy Institute Idasa (Idasa-GAP), in partnership with UNESCO, has developed criteria for assessing the approach to HIV and AIDS teaching in journalism education and training institutions in South Africa. The assessment tool will be piloted at UNESCO’s potential centres of excellence in journalism education in South Africa in the next months. The criteria were based on concepts which emerged through UNESCO’s previous experience in developing assessment criteria for quality journalism education and Idasa-GAP’s experience in using communication approaches which connect HIV and AIDS prevention and treatment to the work of building democratic societies. The theme for this year’s World Press Freedom Day is, “Freedom of Information: The Right to Know”, and will be celebrated in cooperation with the United Nations System, MISA Namibia, The Polytechnic of Namibia and Gender Links.
