BASIC & ENGINEERING SCIENCES
UNESCO Office in Venice's action within the frame of Science and Technology capacity-building

BES-MATRIX4.jpg
UNESCO action in the implementation of programme activities in mathematics, physics and chemistry has always been focused on assisting Member States in training and research through co-operation with competent IGOs, NGOs, networks and centres. Special attention has been paid to developing countries and countries in transition. Rapid scientific advances in biochemistry, microbiology, molecular biology genetics, the neurosciences and bio-information technology offer opportunities for revolutioning human welfare programmes and improvements in the quality of life of all.

At the World Conference on Science in 1999, the importance of engineering and technology was emphasized with particular reference to engineering education, advanced research and university-industry co-operation. The World Engineers' Convention in 2000 also underlined these priorities.
