The World Conference on Science: ‘Science for the Twenty-First Century: a New Commitment’ (1999, Budapest) provided a unique forum at which major stakeholders in the scientific endeavour discussed how science should be pursued - and supported to better meet the expectations of society and the challenges posed by development. The General Conference at its 30th Session committed UNESCO to address, through its programmes relating to science, the recommendations and expressions of intent embodied in the principal documents adopted by WCS.

|SCIENCE POLICY: FORMULATION AND ADVICE|
Fact Finding and Expert Missions. Visit to astronomical institutes and facilities in SEE countries (Bulgaria, Romania, and the Republic of Serbia) and in Ukraine.

Science in post conflict situation
. With a view to put into action the recommendations of the Round Table of Ministers of Science, several ad hoc Working Groups have been established in order to prepare concrete project proposals to be submitted to the donor Conference.

|CAREER OF YOUNG SCIENTIST|
Career prospects for young researchers in the European context
. Piloting Solutions for Alleviating Brain Drain in SEE, as one of UNESCO’s contributions to international action in response to the brain drain phenomenon that countries in South East Europe are facing.
