PEOPLE & NATURE UNESCO Office in Venice's action in particular through the Man & the Biosphere Programme (MAB)
Biosphere reserves put into practice the ecosystem approach: a strategy for the integrated management of land, water and biodiversity that promotes conservation and sustainable use in an equitable way, with the full involvement of local people. The approach was adopted by the Convention on Biological Diversity Conference of the Parties in 2000.
The complex geo-political scenarios offered by the emerging transition economies in Europe is still a very conflicting one, and apparently sensitive to additional 'elements of rigidity' in the strategic planning processes. In particular for South-Eastern European countries, natural resources management - in a broad sense - is becoming more and more a strategic issue, both for the domestic socio-economic planning - in the attempt of reconciling protection issues with urgent development demands - and for the international visibility and negotiation processes.
In the view of contributing to the launching of new BRs (including Transboundary BRs), as well as to a better functioning of the existing ones, which could be used by SEE countries as reference sites in order to promote sustainable development (in particular in the fields of biodiversity conservation and eco-tourism) and cooperation in the region, a long-term effort has been undertaken by UNESCO Office in Venice so to be in position to finalise specific strategies and implementation tools to reinforce the Programme in the area during the next biennium.
