Ms Irina Bokova, Director-General of UNESCO pays tribute to H. E. Mr Umaru Yar'Adua, President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, who died on the 6 May 2010. She notably signed the condolences book opened at the Nigerian Delegation in Miollis 

“The passing away of His Excellency Alhaji Umaru Yar’Adua is a sad loss, not only for Nigeria but also for the whole African continent. His Excellency will be remembered for his action to promote peace, democracy, and development in his country. As Chairman of ECOWAS, he was committed to stability in the sub-region as well as to the advancement of African regional integration.

On behalf of UNESCO and in my own name, I would like to present my sincere sympathies and heartfelt condolences to his family, the Government and peoples of the Federal Republic of Nigeria and to the Nigerian Permanent Delegation to UNESCO.

May he rest in peace”.
