Conference to validate strategy for the strengthening of the Somali media sector

UNESCO will support the Ministry of Information (MoI) by facilitating a media conference to discuss and approve the developed media support strategy (2016-2020). This event, to be held from 11 to 12 January 2016 in Mogadishu, Somalia, will attract participation of Government, Parliamentarians, the UN, Media sector (State media and Private media), Media associations (representing journalists, owners, and special groups), members of the civil society, European Union, United Kingdom, US, and Sweden among other stakeholders.
The developed strategy should enhance the Somali media by giving it strategic direction and enable it set priorities for the development of Somalia; enhance application of the Somalia Media Law thereby strengthening the coordination between media sector actors, including at federal and state level, as well as state, public and private media and media associations from civil society and professional organisations; and strengthen the engagement of the international community in supporting Somali media in a coordinated and cooperative manner.

This activity is organised within the framework of Main Line of Action 1 of promoting an enabling environment for freedom of expression, press freedom and journalistic safety, facilitating pluralism and participation in media, and supporting sustainable and independent media institutions.
