Workshop on Community Radio Program Production for Provincial Journalists of Cambodia
30-11-2010 6:40 am In the framework of its programme for the development of communication and media, the UNESCO Office in Phnom Penh cooperated with the Ministry of Information to organize a five-day workshop on Community Radio Program Production.
Picture 045.jpg The workshop which lasted from 15 November to 19 November 2010 provided radio journalists from rural and remote Cambodian provinces to locate and broadcast on important community problems and concerns. The trainers aimed to support provincial radio journalists in advancing community interests of minority groups through encouraging positive behavior change. In Cambodia, the minority communities in the rural and remote areas have great needs and face serious challenges in many different areas. Radio broadcasts can improve the daily lives of such people by providing useful information related to health, culture, weather, education, environment, agriculture, forestry and more.

Media geared towards the community can act as an instrument to significantly improve living standards. UNESCO, in hopes of providing information to those who are usually excluded from traditional communication means, supports the community radio station of Rattanakiri province. The Community Radio Program broadcasts everyday for one hour in four different indigenous languages—Kreung, Brao, Tampoun, and Jirai. Through the radio, the indigenous community of Rattanakiri promotes its identity, its character and local culture, and forms part of a plurality of voices. Mr. Oeung Sarik, the former director of the Dept. of Information in Rattanakiri and a strong supporter of the Community Radio Program, was the main trainer at the workshop, providing an invaluable on-the-field perspective to the training.

As there are many technical, financial and political issues and challenges surrounding the establishment of community radios, this workshop aimed to provide the journalists with tools to find ways to integrate the voice of minority communities into the existing provincial radio broadcasts. The workshop was a success, and presented a great opportunity for the journalists to share experiences and to network with colleagues from across the country.
