| H.R.H. Prince Talal and Jean Michel Jarre attend the inauguration of the “Drop of Water” exhibition |

Prince Talal Bin Abdul Aziz Al Saud, UNESCO Special Envoy for Water and President of the Arab Gulf Programme for United Nations Development Organizations (AGFUND), and Mr Jean-Michel Jarre, UNESCO Goodwill Ambassador, participated in the inauguration of the exhibition “Drop of Water” held at UNESCO Headquarters on 20 January 2004. During this exhibition, the Director-General of UNESCO, Mr Koïchiro Matsuura announced the closing of the International Year of Freshwater: “…You may recall that it was in your presence, on 12 December 2002, that the International Year of Freshwater was launched, with high expectations of it becoming an unequalled opportunity not only of reaching all regions, countries and communities with clear messages …but of listening carefully to what the world, at all levels, has to say on the vital subject of water…“ said Mr Matsuura in his speech at the information meeting for the Permanent Delegates of UNESCO’s Member States.
“The issue of water is one of the most serious of the problems that will impact on our world’s future and the prosperity of future generations. It has not been given sufficient international attention to date, however, despite the tireless efforts deployed by UNESCO. For this reason, signs of increased international attention to this issue, no matter how small, give me great pleasure. During the past year, I sensed a willingness on the part of the Member States of UNESCO to join forces in order to make more effective contributions to finding innovative solutions to the problem of water scarcity. This has encouraged me, Ladies and Gentlemen, to look towards the next phase with increased hope and optimism and to think along with you about the prospects for this new phase” said H.R.H. Prince Talal in his keynote address.
H.R.H. Prince Talal also announced his intention to donate USD 1 million to launch the Solidarity Fund for Safe Water for All, the creation of which was approved by UNESCO's Executive Board at its 167th Session.
Mr Jean-Michel Jarre announced his intention to make water a central part of his future creative activities – composition, concerts, videos, etc. He also outlined his plans to organize, in conjunction with other artists, concerts all over the world, especially in countries that suffer from desertification.
