About the UNESCO Office Kingston
The UNESCO Cluster Office for the Caribbean , set up in January 2002 as part of the reorganization of UNESCO field structure, works with and for 13 Member States and 3 Associate Member States in the English and Dutch-speaking Caribbean. Before 2002, the Office had specific responsibilities for only Jamaica, Belize and the Bahamas.
|

The Member States are Antigua and Barbuda, Bahamas, Barbados, Belize, Dominica, Grenada, Guyana, Jamaica, Saints Kitts and Nevis, Saint Lucia, Saint Vincent and the Grenadines, Suriname and Trinidad and Tobago. Associate Member States are British Virgin Islands, Netherlands Antilles and Cayman Islands. Of the 16 countries/islands, 14 are members of CARICOM.
The mandate of the office is to serve the Caribbean region in the pursuit of peace and human development, through programmes in education, culture, natural sciences, social and human sciences and communication and information. The office develops and implements activities and projects where interventions are needed within the scope of UNESCO's programmes and in line with the Organization’s five main functions, namely: (i) laboratory of ideas (ii) a standard-setter; (iii) a clearing house; (iv) a capacity-builder in Member States; and (v) a catalyst for international cooperation.
The Office also focuses on programmes designed to support the Caribbean in reaching commitments such as the Millennium Development Goals adopted by Heads of State and Governments including the Caribbean at the UN Millennium Assembly in New York in September 2000; the Mauritius Programme of Action for the Sustainable Development of Small Islands Developing States [2005] and the World Summit on the Information Society Action Plan adopted in Geneva [2003].
We collaborate and cooperate with the National Commissions for UNESCO in the Member States, sister agencies in the UN System, CARICOM, civil society groups, educational and research institutions as well as professional bodies operating in UNESCO’s areas of competence.
