Participation Programme

The aim of UNESCO's Participation Programme is to provide direct assistance to initiatives undertaken by Member States in the Organization's fields of competence, in line with priorities determined by the countries themselves, with proposals submitted via UNESCO National Commissions.

As an ensemble, Participation Programme projects touch on many of the technical fields and areas of concern addressed in the Barbados Programme of Action, including Culture, as reflected in this sampling of projects from 1994 to 2003 inclusive.

Antigua & Barbuda. Heritage Interpretation Workshop - 'Places Touched by Enslaved Africans Antiguans'. Development of craft education programme.
Bahamas. Preparation of radio scripts on the experiences of slavery for broadcast purposes throughout the Bahama Islands. Multi-media resource guide for teachers on 'Experiences of Slavery'. Special projects on conservation of archaeological artifacts, conservation of holdings for the future National Museum's collection, preservation of indigenous Bahamian handicrafts, oral traditions and museum collections.
Barbados. 'Music 2000'data bank. Development of Slavery Museum. Preparation of written materials and educational music texts on eastern Caribbean rhythms and drumming styles. Inventory and digitization of collections at the Barbados Museum and Historical Society. Support to Art Criticism Symposium, as an aid to the development of visual arts.
British Virgin Islands. Publication of ' Voices in the Wind', a history of the BVI.
Cape Verde. Safeguarding and promotion of oral traditions.
Cook Islands. Recording oral heritage on film or video.
Cyprus. Training for young film directors and producers.
Dominica. Development and promotion of folklore and artistic expression. Second annual drama festival of creole theatre. Promoting the sustainability of fading traditional arts among children.
Dominican Republic. Young people's participation in World Heritage preservation and promotion. Regional meeting on slave trade and slavery.
Fiji. Cultural mapping project. Fifth International Conference of Asia-Pacific Migration Research Network. Preparation for Ninth Festival of Pacific Arts (Palau, July 2004)
Grenada. Craft training project for persons with disabilities.
Haiti. Support to performances of the theatrical piece 'The Legend of Kiskeya', synthesizing the history of Haiti. Reinforcement of Marmelade musical school. Preservation and rehabilitation of 'Habitation cafeière de Beaucher'.
Jamaica. Video cataloguing of documentaries on fine arts and architecture. Reprinting for schools of 'Marcus Garvey' book, as contribution to Slave Route project. Digitalization of collections of Jamaica Memory Bank Archive. Interactive CD-ROM on training in the field of visual and performing arts. Inter-Caribbean Seminar on socio-cultural impact of West Indian migration to Costa Rica and Colombia.
Kiribati. Documentation and publication of materials on indigenous knowledge, skills and stories.
Maldives. Training in preservation of tangible cultural heritage for staff of National Museum.
Marshall Islands. Women's natural craft production project, Arno Atoll. Development of Marshallese Language 'First-place reading' Phonics Kit for Delap village. Support to a series of children's books on 'land-sky-ocean' based on Marshallese oral tradition. Training in Aelonlaplap Atoll in traditional canoe-building for 'youth at risk'.
Mauritius. Using the child's mother tongue (Mauritian Kreol) for teaching and learning in lower primary classes.
Micronesia. Second Conference of Traditional Leaders of Micronesia.
Netherlands Antilles. Transatlantic slave trade education. Upgrading arts and theatre centre. Support for teaching dance in higher education. Reinforcing training-learning facilities in steelpan music.
Niue. Participation of high school students in Maori and Pacific Island Festival of Arts.
Palau. Support for canoeing and voyaging activities at the Festival of Pacific Arts (July 2004)
Papua New Guinea. Liberation from the bondage of slavery and polygamy.
St Kitts & Nevis. Enculturation through music, through reinforcing music education in schools.
St Lucia. Underwater cultural heritage protection.
St Vincent & the Grenadines. Enhancing access to slave trade archives and libraries.
Samoa. Support to biennial conference on Pacific history.
Sao Tome & Principe. Recording oral tradition. Improving the national museum though assessment of present state and proposals for future work of inventory, restoration, documentation and management of collections.
Seychelles. Promoting literature in mother language. Setting-up of ethnobotanical gardens and associated activities.
Tokelau. Inputs into Festival of Pacific Arts.
Tonga. Community development programme: improving the status of women. Reinforcing archives for information access and cultural heritage.
Trinidad & Tobago. Developing a music programme for empowering disadvantaged youth.
Tuvalu. Preparing written materials on heritage sites, oral traditions and indigenous arts. Youth health education through drama. Support to artisanal craft workshop (carving). Participation of Tuvalu Cultural Troupe at Pacific Arts Festival.
Vanuatu.. Support to Second Melanesian Arts and Cultural Festival. Documentation of indigenous languages.

Regional and subregional. Assembly of Indigenous People of the Caribbean. Research on slave trade and slavery in the Indian Ocean. Cultural Ministerial Forum of the UNESCO Member States in the Pacific.
