| Management of wastes: Technical Guides and Other Publications |
Publications relating to the 'Management of wastes' in small islands have been generated within the environmental sciences programmes of UNESCO programmes, more particularly associated with work on water resources within the framework of the International Hydrological Programme (IHP) and with marine pollution within the Intergovernmental Oceanographic Commission (IOC).
- Integration of Social and Technical Science in Groundwater Monitoring and Management. Groundwater Pollution Study on Lifuka, Ha'apai, Tonga. Recharge Study on Bonriki, South Tarawa, Kiribati (2001) - by L. Crennan
Combination of social and technical science has also featured in an assessment of groundwater pollution on the island of Lifuka in the Ha'apai Group of the Kingdom of Tonga.More
- Droughts in Small Coral Islands : Bonriki, South Tarawa, Kiribati (1999) - by I. White, T. Falkland and D. Scott
Field work at Kiribati has focused on freshwater groundwater lens recharge at Bonriki, part of the coral island of South Tarawa, including assessment of groundwater recharge in the presence of coconut trees and salinization effects caused by overpumping of groundwater.More
- Groundwater Recharge in Low Coral Islands. Bonriki, South Tarawa, Kiribati. Issues, Traditions and Conflicts in Groundwater Use and Management (1999) - by I. White, T. Falkland, L. Crennan, P. Jones, T. Metutera, B. Etuati, E. Metai
Study at South Tarawa carried out within a joint initiative of UNESCO-IHP and the South Pacific Applied Geoscience Council (SOPAC), highlighting traditions and conflicts in groundwater use and management. Published as IHP-V Technical Documents in Hydrology No. 25.More
- Groundwater Pollution by Sanitation on Tropical Islands (1997) - by P. Dillon
IHP-V Technical Documents in Hydrology No. 6. This review describes the extent of groundwater pollution by sanitation systems, the design of sanitation systems, the nature of contaminants in sewage, their fate in the subsurface environment including factors affecting their attenuation, and the methods which have been used to study the movement of sewage contaminants in groundwater.More
- Freshwater Lens Recharge at Boniriki, Kiribati. Preliminary Report (1996) - by I. White
Knowledge of the recharge of the fresh groundwater lenses of small, low-lying islands in the humid tropics is essential in managing the sustainable extraction of potable water.More
- Small Tropical Islands : Water Resources of Paradises Lost (1992) - by A.C.Falkland
Semi-popular overview of the water resources of small tropical islands, which featured in one of a series of illustrated non-technical IHP reports on water-related issues of the humid tropics and other warm humid regions.More
- Hydrology and Water Resources of Small Islands: A Practical Guide (1991) - by A.C. Falkland (editor)
Within the IHP, an early (1991) multi-authored practical guide, published as IHP Studies and Reports in Hydrology No. 49. Designed to assist technicians, hydrologists, engineers and managers in the identification, assessment, development, management and protection of water resources on small islands, in presenting a selection of methods and practices appropriate to the special conditions of small islands.More
- Water for People, Water for Life. The United Nations World Water Development Report (2003) - by UNESCO-World Water Assessment Programme
Within the broader international community, and as part of a collective system-wide assessment process involving 23 United Nations bodies and programmes, UNESCO is centrally involved in developing the tools and skills needed to achieve a better understanding of the basic processes, management practices and policies that will help improve the supply and quality of global freshwater resources.More
