Manu Dibango is being given this distinction “in recognition of his exceptional contribution to the development of the arts, of peace and to dialogue among the world’s cultures.”

Born in Douala, Cameroon, in 1933, Manu Dibango is the father of the dance music genre Makossa. Over five decades as a saxophonist and composer Mr Dibango has toured Europe, Africa and the United States. His numerous recordings have influenced popular music in the three continents, and won him an international place as an original artist who drew inspiration from African and African American music.

UNESCO’s Artists for Peace*, like its Goodwill Ambassadors, are international celebrities who use their influence, charisma and prestige to help promote UNESCO’s message and programmes. Other celebrated UNESCO Artists for peace include, Guinean singer Sayon Camara, Venezuelan actress Patricia Velasquez, Brazilian musician Gilberto Gil who is now his country’s Culture Minister, Chinese actress Gong Li, Korean soprano Sumi Jo, Bangladeshi fashion designer Bibi Russell, and French composer and performer Chico Bouchikhi, founder of the Gypsy Kings.
