The HIV/AIDS epidemic continues to spread steadily in Latin America and the Caribbean striking men and women alike, and mostly the young. Any prevention measures/treatments against this disease, however, must be complemented with initiatives designed to educate the population in this area of health, so as to ensure the acquisition of self-care habits that will help prevent infections and contribute to develop attitudes of solidarity and non-discrimination towards those already infected.

Led by UNESCO, the Global Initiative on Education and HIV & AIDS (EDUCAIDS), a UNESCO technical cooperation and advocacy initiative, seeks to encourage analysis and promote prevention initiatives within the education sector. OREALC/UNESCO Santiago has accumulated 20 years of experience on methodology and didactics of learning about HIV/AIDS, which combined with its knowledge of institutional structures, would facilitate the transversal integration of this dimension of health into the curriculum, or as part of sex education instruction in schools. UNESCO also plays an active role in the Joint United Nations Programme on HIV/AIDS (UNAIDS) that attempts to maximise the efficiency and impact of the global response to this epidemic.

UNESCO’s long-term mission is to make available the knowledge, habits, and skills that will ensure protection against HIV/AIDS to every person in the region, and promote non-discrimination values and behaviours with victims of the disease, through a strategy of government persuasion and technical cooperation with ministries of education.
