HIV & AIDS Workplace Policies for the Education Sector (ILO and UNESCO)

HIV & AIDS Workplace Policies for the Education Sector (ILO and UNESCO)

The ILO/UNESCO collaborative work aims to support Member States in the adaptation and/or development of HIV/AIDS-specific workplace policies for the education sector in order to ensure supportive and safe learning environments that meet the needs of students and educators.

During 2004, the ILO initiated a programme to develop a sectoral approach to HIV & AIDS education sector workplaces, as a complement to the ILO Code of Practice on HIV/AIDS in the world of work, adopted in 2001.

In 2005, UNESCO joined the ILO in a collaborative project, aimed at the development of an HIV and AIDS workplace policy and related resource materials for use by education staff and stakeholders at national and institutional levels.

This project has now been implemented in two regions: in the Caribbean and in Southern Africa.

Each of the workshops resulted in:
• a workplace policy on HIV and AIDS for the education sector in the region;
• implementation guidelines and
• action plans/strategy outlines for each country

The workplace policies discussed and agreed during these workshops are adapted and specific to the region. ILO and UNESCO are committed to support the development and implementation of the two policies and are exploring the possibility of expanding the scope of the project to other regions.

ILO and UNESCO are working closely with governmental bodies of Member States, employment organizations, teacher unions, civil society organizations, and other partner organizations, firstly in the design of these policies and secondly by subsequent support in the dissemination and implementation.
