UNESCO-UNFPA consultation to develop international guidelines for sex, relationships, HIV/STI education

On 18-19 February 2009, UNESCO and UNFPA convened a global technical consultation to develop international guidelines for school-based education about sex, relationships, and HIV/STIs in Menlo Park, California, USA.

The meeting was hosted at the Hewlett Foundation, and participants included members of UNESCO’s Global Advisory group and sexuality education experts from Africa, Asia, Latin America and the Caribbean, Europe and North America. The technical consultation discussed the working draft which is aimed at policy makers in ministries of education and their counterparts.

During the two days, participants made important suggestions for improving the draft including the section on the minimum package of age-appropriate topics and learning objectives for young people aged 5-18+ years. The draft is under revision and will be available later in 2009.
