HIV and AIDS

Proceedings of the round table on « HIV/AIDS, Stigma and Discrimination : An Anthropological Approach »

Organized on 29 November 2002 at UNESCO Headquarters, the round table gathered anthropologists together to discuss stigma and discrimination, the themes of the World AIDS Campaign 2002-2003.

Proceedings of the round table on « HIV/AIDS, Stigma and Discrimination : An Anthropological Approach »

This round table presented an opportunity to discuss the socio-cultural dimension of the notions of stigma and discrimination, and to illustrate it very concretely with case studies from several African and Asian countries. Following this anthropological approach, HIV & AIDS can be considered as a « social disease : a set of representations that each culture associates to the disease and its victims, and the attitudes coming from it » (A. Desclaux)
