HIV and AIDS

Country Specific Studies (Angola, Argentina, Cuba, Dominican Republic, India, Jamaica, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Malawi, Mozambique, Russia, South Africa, Thailand, Uganda, Uruguay, Vietnam, Zimbabwe)

Research is a necessary first step towards the formulation of methodological proposals and guidelines for culturally-appropriate action.

It aims at identifying socio-cultural factors which play a major role in the dynamics of the epidemic and at defining how specific cultural resources can be mobilised in the response to HIV and AIDS.

Country assessments combine:

Institutional assessment: reviewing how institutional action has considered the cultural aspects of prevention and care programmes and projects.

In-depth case investigation: concentrating on people’s reactions concerning risk and the need for them to change their sexual and non-sexual behaviour accordingly, in relation to their cultural references and resources.

Formulation of a set of methodological proposals and guidelines for utilizing cultural approaches in designing, implementing, adapting and evaluating national AIDS strategies and programs and for training/sensitising the actors and agents involved in this field.
