Study of the Education Sector Response to HIV and AIDS in Ghana
A study has been launched to document Ghana’s education sector’s response to HIV and AIDS in order to facilitate evidence-based decision making, contribute to strengthened coordination, and support effective partnerships.
The study will bring out lessons and experiences from current and past work, as well as consolidate existing information and data.
Specifically, the study will:
• Identify HIV and AIDS interventions in the education sector;
• Provide strategic information that will facilitate more targeted response; and
• Identify key areas of collaboration among stakeholders.
The project is co-funded by UNESCO, UNICEF and UNFPA and launched by UNESCO in collaboration with: the Ministry of Education, Science and Sports (MoESS), Ghana AIDS Commission (GAC), UNESCO Institute of Statistics (UIS), Joint United Nations Programme on AIDS (UNAIDS), United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF) and United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA)
Since 2001, Ghana has adapted a multi-sectoral national response to HIV and AIDS. The MoESS has set up the HIV Secretariat to coordinate the sectors contribution. An assessment by the Secretariat, revealed the urgent need to strengthen coordination among all stakeholders, through stock taking of current and past work and evidence of good policy and practice.
The report on the study is expected to be published in November 2007.
