SpaceForScience: A cooperation between Alcatel Alenia and UNESCO for enhancing scientific information and services

Initiated in November 2005, the SpaceForScience partnership aims at providing telecommunication and multimedia satellite services for education and research institutes in South Eastern Europe.

The Program
SpaceForScience facilitates the scientific and technical co-operation within various scientific communities (computer science, biology, agriculture and earth science) in Europe and especially in Southern and Eastern Europe (Albania, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Bulgaria, Croatia, FYR of Macedonia, Serbia and Montenegro and Turkey). Using satellite technology, scientific institution members of the program are able to benefit from new services such as video conferencing, collaborative environment, video streaming and data transfer.

The Cooperation

  • In 2001, UNESCO launched the SpaceForScience program as a part of its initiative to strengthen scientific cooperation in South-East Europe.
  • The project was co-financed with the help of ESA.
  • In order to enhance cooperation in Europe, Alcatel Alenia Space was “eager to provide broadband satellite connectivity to the scientific community”.
  • The cooperation was generated by Alcatel Alenia in association with UNESCO’s initiative to provide broadband access and added value applications to formerly isolated institutions in South-East Europe.
