UNESCO - UNESCO hosts Africa Week from 22 to 26 May

19-05-2006 2:30 pm “African Cultural Heritage, a Motor for Renaissance” is the theme of Africa Week to be held this year at UNESCO from 22 to 31 May within the framework of Africa Day (25 May). Participants in this year’s event include Pierre Kipré, former Minister of National Education of Côte d’Ivoire, Doudou Diène, United Nations Special Rapporteur for Racism, Xenophobia and Discrimination and Elizabeth Wangari, Chief of the Africa Unit of the World Heritage Centre.

The Week will begin with an exhibition of African art and craft, which will be inaugurated on 22 May in the Salle des Pas Perdu at 3pm, and will continue until 31 May. Screenings of African films will be held on the afternoons on 22, 23 and 24 May in Room II.

Conferences and debates on Africa’s cultural heritage will be held on 23 May in Room II from 2pm to 5pm. Doudou Diène from Senegal will approach the issue from the perspective of UNESCO’s Slave Road Project, Professor Pierre Kipré will examine oral traditions while Elizabeth Wangari will address the subject of heritage and development.

A cultural and artistic evening on 24 May, featuring a fashion show and a concert in Room I from 8pm to 11pm, will be preceded by a tasting of African dishes in the Japanese Garden from 6pm to 8pm.
