HIV and AIDS

UNESCO, BBC World Service Trust and UNICEF to train journalists in HIV and AIDS reporting

UNICEF has supported the organization of a series of training sessions at the national level in Azerbaijan, held in Baku, Azerbaijan on 2-5 December 2006.

The workshops have been a follow-up to the training-of-trainers workshop organised by UNESCO and the BBC WST, within the framework of the UNESCO/Flanders project Culture, HIV and AIDS in Armenia, Azerbaijan and Georgia.

The two training workshops have addressed journalists and news editors in order to increase the quality and diversity of reports on HIV and AIDS. The training has highlighted socio-cultural issues such as traditions or gender norms and practices related to HIV and AIDS in Azerbaijan. A special emphasis has been given to the use of appropriate and non-stigmatising language (text and image) when reporting on HIV and AIDS.

The workshops, organised in collaboration with INTERNEWS Azerbaijan, has brought together participants from all regions of Azerbaijan.

Three other training workshops have been conducted in Ganja, Masalli and Guba (Azerbaijan) between 15-31 January 2007 (one training per each region).
