UNESCO Forum will focus on building a green society

Paris, 23 October

In advance of the United Nations Conference on Climate Change in Copenhagen in December, a Forum entitled "Mitigating Climate Change - Building a Global Green Society” will be held at UNESCO headquarters (Room XII, 10 a.m. to 1 p.m.), on 26 October under the auspices of UNESCO’s Foresight programme.

The meeting, part of the UNESCO Future Forum series, will be opened by Koïchiro Matsuura, Director-General of UNESCO. Keynote speakers are Mario Amano, Deputy Secretary-General of the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD) in charge of the environment and Laurence Tubiana, founder of the Institute for Sustainable Development and International Relations (IDDRI). From 1997 to 2002, she served as senior advisor to the French Prime Minister Lionel Jospin on environmental issues and conducted a number of international negotiations.

Other speakers will be Edward Ayensu, Chairman of the Council for Scientific and Industrial Research (CSIR), Ghana; Lailai Li, Deputy Director, Stockholm Environment Institute; Fulai Sheng, Senior Economist, United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP), Economics and Trade Branch; Kevin Watkins, Director, UNESCO Education For All Global Monitoring Report; Philippe Queau, Director of the UNESCO Office in Rabat, former Director of Research at the National Audiovisual Institute (INA); and John Crowley, Chief of UNESCO’s Section for Ethics of Science and Technology.
Mark Richmond, Director of UNESCO’s Division for the Coordination of UN Priorities in Education, will moderate the Forum.
