Fifty participants joined a UNESCO workshop in Islamabad on Thursday in the build-up to the International Day to End Impunity for Crimes against Journalists to be marked on 2 November. The discussants examined the issues raised in the draft of a new study covering journalists' safety and the problem of impunity in the country. For the pilot phase 100 teachers have been given free Nokia phones to increase their knowledge and skills through using Nokia Education Delivery Application; the resource material for teachers has been digitized in audio visual format, which they can access free of cost through internet. Methods of control include control over newsprint, budget for advertising and public interest campaigns, and its ability to enforce regulations. Pressure groups (political parties, religious groups, ethnic groups etc.) use physical violence, sacking of offices, intimidation and beating of journalists, and interference with distribution of newspapers censorship and laws curtailing freedom of press. This project is to mobilize support to draft the legislation for impunity of killing of journalists and free press, which is later accepted. This is specifically important in the scenario of Pakistan as one of the deadliest countries around the world for last two years, with average one journalist killed after every 50 days. |
