Mobilizing Policy Support for Press Freedom and Impunity of killing of Journalists in Pakistan

UNESCO's CI sector's mandate of "Freedom of Expression" this is an important initiative, much needed in the environment of Pakistan. With numerous dictatorships in Pakistan's history, many attempts have been made to
strangle and control the vibrant and active press of Pakistan. Methods of control include control over newsprint, budget for advertising and public interest campaigns, and its ability to enforce regulations. Pressure groups (political parties, religious groups, ethnic groups etc.) use physical violence, sacking of offices, intimidation and beating of journalists, and interference with distribution of newspapers censorship and laws curtailing freedom of press. This project is to mobilize support to draft the legislation for impunity of killing of journalists and free press, which is later accepted. This is specifically important in the scenario of Pakistan as one of the deadliest countries around the world for last two years, with average one journalist killed after every 50 days.
