International Day of Persons with Disabilities 2013

UNESCO joins hands with Persons with Disabilities to observe International Day of Persons with Disabilities

3rd December is observed globally as International Day of Persons with Disabilities. UNESCO endorses the rights of disabled persons and particularly advocates learning opportunities for the disabled people in inclusive environments. The theme for this year is "BREAK BARRIERS, OPEN DOORS: FOR AN INCLUSIVE SOCIETY FOR ALL". This year, UNESCO in partnership with NGOs and Government organizations working for persons with disabilities supported a number of events to highlight the spirit of rights of disabled persons in Pakistan.

World Down Syndrome Day: UNESCO pays tributes to children with Down Syndrome

Karachi - 21st March 2013: To celebrate the value, acceptance and inclusion of people with Down syndrome, UNESCO commemorated World Down Syndrome Day, for the first time in Karachi. The event gathered a
large number of stakeholders and activists for the rights of persons with disabilities and shared views and ideas for the inclusion of persons with Down syndrome in everyday life. The event was organized in collaboration with Pakistan Down Syndrome Association in Karachi. Read more...

Review Meeting on Draft Toolkit on Inclusive Education

A meeting of experts and practitioners of special education/ inclusive education to review the draft script of the toolkit held on 6-7 February 2013 in Islamabad as to help improve the draft script of the toolkit.
The participants included from Special Education Department, Govt. of Punjab, Directorate of Staff Development, Govt. of Punjab, University of Punjab, Lahore, Allama Iqbal Open University, Islamabad, teachers, head teachers and managers from schools and colleges of Islamabad Capital Territory (ICT), representatives of relevant Civil Society Organizations of Punjab and Islamabad.. Read more...

National Consultation on Implementation of Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities (CRPD)

A National Consultation Seminar on Implementation of CRPD was held on 12th September, 2011 at Hotel Serena, Islamabad. The main topic of the seminar was "Inclusive Education/Literacy and barrier free
communication and information with special emphasis on Women with Disabilities". This National Consultation was jointly organized by UNESCO Islamabad and the Special Talent Exchange Program (STEP), Islamabad. Dr. Kozue Kay Nagata, Director/Representative, UNESCO Islamabad made a welcome speech on the occasion. Syed Mustafain Kazmi, Director General, Directorate General of Special Education, Islamabad was the Chief Guest. A large number of participants including organizations working for Disabled Persons from all over the country participated.

Presentations were made on the following topics:

1. Gender Mainstreaming and Women with Disabilities by Ms. Abia Akram, Women Coordinator, DPI Asia Pacific
2. Inclusive Education by Mr. Niazullah Khan, Inclusive Education Expert, Avisenna Consultants, Islamabad
3. Literacy, Right to Education & Barrier-Free Communication and Information by Mr. Arshad Saeed Khan, Senior National Specialist (Education), UNESCO Islamabad

Later during the day, five groups were formed, which presented their groups work in the form of analysis of the sub-themes and summing up with recommendations for implementation of UNCRPD in Pakistan.
