UNESCO is assisting the Government of Pakistan to develop reliable flood early warning system of Pakistan

Islamabad - 21 December 2015: A two-day international workshop titled 'Meaning and Characterizing River Morphology for Hindcasting and Forecasting River Responses to Major Floods' was jointly organized by UNESCO, PCRWR and PMD aimed at setting up a common understanding and direction for river modelling data requirements, from acquisition and measurement methods to effective use in river floods simulations which will be extended from Indus IFAS system to the tributary rivers of the Indus i.e. Jhelum, Chenab, Ravi, Sutlej. This international workshop is part of phase-II of UNESCO's "Strategic Strengthening of Flood Early Warning and Management Capacity of Pakistan" Project, which was launched in March 2015, worth USD 4.05 million. Read more...

Pakistan to lead Accreditation of Engineering Qualifications through FEIAP

Islamabad - 17 December 2015: A meeting was held at Pakistan Engineering Council (PEC) to proclaim Pakistan's Membership in FEIAP and to explore the prospects of Central Asian and African countries to adopt FEIAP engineering qualification standards under UNESCO-FEIAP partnership. Meeting was attended by UNESCO Regional Director for Science, Dr. Shahbaz Khan, Chairman PEC, Engr. Jawed Salim Qureshi, President ECO Science Foundation, Dr. Manzoor Soomro and Honorable Ambassador of Tajikistan, H.E. Sherali Jononov. Soomro, President of ECO Science Foundation and Ms. Vibeke Jensen , Representative of UNESCO in Pakistan, as well as MAB National Committee members representing Forest and Wildlife Departments of all the provinces, Gilgit-Baltistan, Azad Jammu and Kashmir, Ministry of Climate Change, MoST, UNESCO, PMNH, IUCN and WWF-Pakistan and Pakistan National Commission for UNESCO were also present at the meeting. Read more...

UNESCO, Pakistan Science Foundation and ECO Science Foundation commemorate the World Science Day under the theme 'Science for a Sustainable Development'

Islamabad - 11 November 2015: UNESCO Islamabad together with Pakistan Science Foundation (PSF) and ECO Science Foundation (ECOSF) jointly organized an event on the occasion of World Science Day 2015 at the Pakistan Science Foundation (PSF) headquarters in Islamabad. The theme for this years' was 'Science for a Sustainable Development'. Strategic Strengthening of Flood Warning and Management Capacity Of Pakistan - Phase II

Lahore - 6/7 August 2015: Under the project, "Strategic Strengthening of Flood Warning and Management Capacity of Pakistan", International Centre for Water Hazard and Risk Management (ICHARM) under the auspices of UNESCO and
Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency (JAXA) has developed a model "Indus IFAS" and installed at FFD Lahore for operation in 2014. However, after 2014 floods in the Eastern rivers and in order to improve Indus-IFAS, there was a dire need to extend the Indus IFAS system to the tributary rivers of the Indus i.e. Jhelum, Chenab, Ravi, Sutlej. Read more...

MasterClass on Community-Based Flood Management

Islamabad - 7 May 2015: More than 170 participants from higher education institutions across Asia-Pacific participated in an interactive e-learning 'MasterClass' on Community-Based Flood Management, jointly hosted by UNESCO and
the National University of Sciences and Technology (NUST) Islamabad, Pakistan. The three-hour event featured lectures lived-streamed from Islamabad by Dr. Hamza Farooq Gabriel, Dr. Kamran Akhtar and S. Muhammad Jamil from NUST, and from Jakarta by Prof. Shahbaz Khan of UNESCO, and a question and answer session with students and faculty from Bangladesh University of Engineering and Technology (BUET), the University of Indonesia, Universiti Teknologi Malaysia (UTM) and Keio University. Read more...
