Tuesday September 21 is the International Day of Peace and UNESCO has joined hands with other UN entities, International Organizations and Civil Society to strengthen actions towards achieving peace in the world.

“Exchange and dialogue between cultures are the best tools for building peace.”Irina Bokova, UNESCO Director-General

The International Day of Peace has been observed worldwide on 21 September each year since 2001. It provides an opportunity for individuals, organizations and nations to engage in action that can contribute to building a culture of peace. Exchange and dialogue with other individuals, communities and stakeholders will help to enhance the impact and relevance of such activities.

As one of the central tenets of UNESCO’s mission is to build the defenses of peace in the minds of men and women, this Day has particular significance for the Organization. This year, it coincides with the last year of the International Decade for a Culture of Peace and Non-Violence for the Children of the World (2001-2010), and the the International Year for the Rapprochement of Cultures (2010) both of which are mutually reinforcing.
