In April 2000, the World Education Forum (Dakar, Senegal) underlined the urgency of ensuring education for girls and women as one of the key elements of poverty eradication and development.
3 of the 6 EFA Goals identified in Dakar specifically address women and girls and/or gender equality.
Guided by this landmark event, UNESCO’s strategic objectives in the area of Education are to :
• Promote education as a fundamental right in accordance with the Universal Declaration of Human Rights;
• Improve the quality of education through the diversification of contents and methods and the promotion of universally shared values ;
• Promote experimentation, innovation and the diffusion and sharing of information and best practices as well as policy dialogue in education.
