“I strongly welcome the proposal made by H.H. Sheikha Mozah to have a certain number of schools in Gaza declared as safety zones. Indeed, schools should in no way be involved in military conflict”, declared Mr Matsuura. “I commend Her Highness’ strong commitment to better ensure the protection of children and educational personnel and her unsparing efforts to mobilize support in favour of education systems in crisis-affected countries”, added the Director-General.

On 5th January, H.H. Sheikha Mozah bint Nasser al Missned, Chairperson of the Qatar Foundation for Education, Science and Community Development, and Special Envoy for Basic and Higher Education to UNESCO, in a letter addressed to the UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon, urged that a number of educational institutions be allocated for the creation of safety zones in Gaza to offer special protection to school children.
