As the lead agency of Education for All (EFA), UNESCO has been coordinating the international efforts to achieve the six EFA goals by 2015.
In view of strengthening the commitment of Parliamentarians towards generating greater awareness of and giving due consideration to the challenges facing Education, UNESCO, with the support of the Governments of Indonesia and Japan, organized a Regional Parliamentary Conference for Education in the Asia and Pacific from 24 to 25 October 2008 in Jakarta.
Around 50 participants: Parliamentarians, representatives from Education Ministries in the Asia and Pacific region as well as UNESCO education specialists attended the Conference.
At this meeting, the Forum of Asia Pacific Parliamentarians for Education (FASPPED) was established to associate the Parliamentarians in the region more closely with the planning and implementation of all EFA goals. Statutes (FASPPED objectives) and Jakarta Declaration (FASPPED action plan and strategy) were adopted by the participants.
The working language of the Conference was English.
