COP21 - Le Bourget

The 21st session of the Conference of the Parties to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC), or COP21, was held on the Paris-Le Bourget site, bringing together around 40,000 participants in total - delegates representing each country, observers, and civil society members. It was the largest diplomatic event ever hosted by France and one of the largest climate conferences ever organized.

Sustained and global ocean observation and research are absolutely necessary to understand the impact of changing climate, to assess regional vulnerability, and to monitor the efficacy of adaptation and mitigation efforts. This argument was at the heart of two events that took place on 2 December 2015 in the Blue Zone.

The first, organized by UN-Oceans and coordinated by IOC, was entitled “One Ocean, One Climate, One UN: Working together for a healthy and resilient ocean”.

This event was followed by an “ocean session” organized by the Government of Peru on the occasion of Resilience Day.

3 December 2015

The "Ocean and Climate Forum", organized by IOC, the Ocean and Climate Platform and the Global Ocean Forum, brought together scientists, economic actors, civil society and youth representatives, as well as decision-makers, to debate on the link between ocean and climate. The event took place on 3 December 2015 in the Climate Generations Areas.

This event was followed by the signing of a partnership with IMOCA, a class association which takes care of 60-foot Open monohulls, at the UNESCO Pavilion in the Climate Generations Areas. This collaboration will contribute to IOC's Global Ocean Observing System.

4 December 2015

Following the "Ocean and Climate Forum", the "Oceans Day at COP21" was a further step in the expression of civil society for the integration of the ocean into the future climate regime. The event took place on 4 December 2015 in the Climate Generations Areas.

7 December 2015

As COP21 negotiations proceed into their second week, the scientific community continued to rally political leaders, non-governmental and intergovernmental organizations, civil society and the private sector in favor of an ambitious agreement that recognized the importance of the ocean and coasts in the global climate system. The event "The Importance of Addressing Oceans and Coasts in an Ambitious Agreement at the UNFCCC COP 21" took place on 7 December 2015 in the Blue Zone.

The “Ocean and Climate Moment” was the last gathering convened by IOC to highlight the key scientific messages issued throughout COP21 about the ways and means to advance integrated ocean solutions to climate change. The event took place on 10 December 2015 at the UNESCO Pavilion in the Climate Generations Areas.
