Ms Irina Bokova, Director-General of UNESCO, and Ms Lulama Xingwana, Minister of Arts and Culture of South Africa, signed an Agreement establishing the African World Heritage Fund as a UNESCO Category II Center 

South Africa has initiated and led the process of the creation of the African World Heritage Fund (AWHF) in close cooperation with Africa Group at UNESCO. The establishment of the Fund as a category 2 centre was approved by the Executive Board at its 182nd session, then endorsed by the 35th session of the General Conference.
