Open discussion with Professor Vinh-Kim NGUYEN Professor Vinh-Kim NGUYEN, physician and medical anthropologist Associate professor in the department of social and preventive medicine, University of Montreal, Canada, will be speaking on : "Gender, Culture and HIV in the XXIst Century: Social Triage – Gender and the Response to HIV in Africa". This event took place in the framework of an Expert Group Meeting organised on 4 and 5 October in UNESCO Headquarters, with a view to contributing to a volume on this same topic to be published jointly by the Social Science Research Council and UNESCO.

The meeting brought together a small number of concerned scholars whose work addresses the question of how and why the response to the HIV epidemic is failing women, particularly young women and girls.

The intended outcome of the meeting will be a short and incisive volume addressed to academics, activists and policy-makers. We aim for the volume to be global in scope, including work on emerging epidemics in India and China, including regions with less-developed or under-recognized epidemics, as in Eurasia, and those with advanced pandemics. UNESCO and SSRC also aim to include senior authors and new scholars from affected regions and different professional perspectives.

Professor Vinh-Kim Nguyen’s talk has been followed by an open discussion moderated by Ms Gülser Corat, Chief of the Section for Women and Gender Equality of the Bureau of Strategic Planning.
