Monique LaRue studied philosophy, then earned a Ph.D. graduate in literature under the direction of Roland Barthes.

She has taught for over 30 years of literature and language French at Collège Édouard-Montpetit (Longueuil).

She has published six novels: La cohorte fictive (1979), Les faux fuyants (1982), Copies conformes (1990, Grand Prix du livre de Montreal), La démarche du crabe (1996, Grand Prix Journal de Montreal), La gloire de Cassiodore (2002, Price Governor General of Canada), L’oeil de Marquise (2009, Jacques-Cartier's French-language novel, awarded by the Centre Jacques Cartier in Lyon for the whole first time in 2009), and a study, Promenades littéraires à Montréal (1990), in collaboration with Jean-François Chassay.

A collection of essays published in 2006, leading to another (Penguin Books), received a mention Special Jury of the Association of Canadian and Quebec Literatures.

Members of the Académie des Lettres du Québec since 1998, Monique LaRue was a member of several literary juries, including the Prix Émile-Nelligan, the Governor General's Award (novel), the Prix Athanase-David and the Grand Prix du livre de Montreal.

She writes for the magazine L’Inconvénient.
