Paris, 2 October 2014 – The conditions of work for teachers and their professional development will be the subject of discussion at a UNESCO forum marking World Teachers Day 2014, which will be held on Monday 6 and Tuesday 7 October at the Organization’s Paris Headquarters.
The event will be opened by Qian Tang, UNESCO Assistant Director-General for Education, Fred van Leeuwen, General Secretary of Education International and Olivier Liang, Education Sector Specialists at the International Labour Office (10.30, room 4).
Participants will include academics and researchers, representatives of teachers associations and government representatives from around the world.
Their discussions will be organized via series of workshops on Monday 6 October addressing: the Life and working conditions of teachers; Teachers’ continuous professional development; How ICT can support teacher training; and Pedagogical innovations in education.
On Tuesday 7 October, the programme will open with the UNESCO-Hamdan Prize Ceremony (9.30, room 4). This prize, awarded for Outstanding Practice and Performance in Enhancing the Effectiveness of Teachers will be presented this year to Oxfam Novib and Education International 9Belgium); SOS Villages d’Enfants (Madagascar) and the ProEd Foundtion (Panama).
Sheikh Hamdan bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Deputy Ruler of Dubai and the United Arab Emirates Minister of Finance will address the ceremony.
The celebration at UNESCO Headquarters is one among scores of events planned for the day in all regions of the world.
This year marks the 20th anniversary of World Teachers’ Day, which commemorates the adoption of the ILO/UNESCO Recommendation concerning the status of teachers in 1966. This recommendation is morally binding for all countries.
