Rio de Janeiro World Science Forum to focus on Science for Global Sustainable Development
The sixth World Science Forum will be held in Rio de Janeiro (Brazil) from 24 to 27 November. Participants’ reflection on contemporary challenges to science will this year centre on the theme of “global sustainable development”.
The President of Brazil, Dilma Roussef; the Director-General of UNESCO, Irina Bokova, and the President of Hungary, János Ader, will be among those opening the World Science Forum. Participants attending the event, held in the wake of the Rio+20 United Nations Conference on Sustainable Development, will consider the role of science in innovation, the links between science policy and governance as well as science and engineering education, and scientific integrity.
UNESCO will host thematic sessions on water cooperation and security, disaster risk reduction, the oceans and young scientists.The award ceremony of the 2013 Sultan Qaboos Prize for Environment Preservation will also take place in Rio on 24 November. The Prize is awarded every two years for outstanding contributions to the management or preservation of the environment.The Kalinga Prize for the Popularization of Science will also be awarded during the Science Forum. The Prize is given every two years for an outstanding effort to interpret science and technology to the general public.
The Forum is organized by the Brazilian Academy of Sciences in partnership with the Hungarian Academy of Sciences, UNESCO, the International Council for Science Unions (ICSU), the European Academies Science Advisory Council (EASAC) and the American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS). Held every two years, it brings together scientists, policy-makers, nongovernmental organizations, educational and research institutions and science journalists.
The World Forum was established after the 1999 World Science Conference, organized by UNESCO and ICSU in Budapest. From 2003 to 2011, the event was held in the capital of Hungary but every second session will now be hosted by another country.
