  • Mehriban Aliyeva organizes an International Conference on Expanding the Role of Women in Cross Cultural Dialogue

11-06-2008 4:10 pm On 10 June 2008 Mrs Mehriban Aliyeva, First Lady of the Republic of Azerbaijan and UNESCO Goodwill Ambassador, opened the Baku International Conference on Expanding the Role of Women in Cross Cultural Dialogue.Baku1.jpg

This conference organized by the Heydar Aliyev Foundation, which Mrs Aliyeva chairs, with the support of OIC, UNESCO and ISESCO, aimed at raising global awareness about ways women can use to make our world safer in various aspects.

During the Conference new challenges of the 21st century such as international terrorism, racial discrimination, ethnic and religious hatred, the educational divide between nations, lack of tolerance etc. were discussed by important decision makers, politicians, scientists and female activists and many fresh ideas and proposals were initiated by panelists in this conference.

Among the participants were Mrs Maria Kaczyńska, First Lady of the Republic of Poland, Mrs Lilita Zatlere, First Lady of the Republic of Latvia, Mrs Zanele Mbeki, First Lady of the Republic of South Africa, Mrs Ana Paula Dos Santos, First Lady of the Republic of Angola, Mrs Emine Erdoğan, spouse of the Prime Minister of the Turkish Republic, Mrs María Cristina Cerutti de Cobos, spouse of the Vice President of Argentina, Mrs Svetlana Orlova, Vice Speaker of the Federation Council of the Russian Federation, Mrs Anita Perry, First Lady of the State of Texas, Mr Ekmeleddin Ihsanoglu, Secretary-General of the Organization of Islamic Conference, Mr Abdulaziz Othman Altwaijri, Director-General of ISESCO and Ms Katerina Stenou, Director of Division of Cultural Policies and Intercultural Dialogue.

Mrs Mehriban Aliyeva said: “Our Forum aims to treat these problems through a special prism. It is a female approach and views to such problems. I think that the important advantage of this approach is that a woman can mobilize and be clear to anyone. The reason is very simple. This position is based on love, which is the main essence of a woman’s existence - love to her children, relatives, all human beings on Earth and to the Lord. It is not possible to imagine the life of a woman without love. Only this love can help us overcoming deep hatred, xenophobia, racial and religious intolerance.”

A video address of Mr Koïchiro Matsuura, UNESCO Director-General, was also shown at the conference.
