| Her Majesty Queen Rania and His Royal Highness Prince Talal Bin Abdul Aziz inaugurate Arab Open University facility in Jordan |
26-02-2010 12:00 am Her Majesty Queen Rania of Jordan and His Royal Highness Prince Talal Bin Abdul Aziz, President of the Arab Gulf Programme for the United Nations Development Organization (AGFUND) inaugurated the new premises of the Arab Open University (AOU) in Tareq, Jordan on Wednesday 24 February 2010. The inauguration was attended by many notable personalities such as HRH Prince Al-Waleed bin Talal bin Abdul Aziz Al Saud, HRH Prince Turki bin Talal bin Abdul Aziz Al Saud and HRH Prince Abdul Rahman bin Talal bin Abdul Aziz Al Saud; the Prime Minister of Jordan, Mr Samir Rifai; the former Deputy Director-General of UNESCO, Professor Adnan Badran, also former Prime Minister of Jordan and President of Petra University and the Arab Academy of Sciences; the Minister of Higher Education and Scientific Research, Mr Walid Maani, and Mrs Basma Irsheid, Chief of UNESCO’s Celebrity Advocates and Arab Funding Sources Programme. High government and civil society officials, academics and high profile businessmen from different countries also participated in this important event.
Her Majesty Queen Rania, co-chair of AOU’s board of trustees, along with its chairman, His Royal Highness Prince Talal, unveiled a plaque next to the new building, which has been equipped with the latest technology to boost services.
During the ceremony, which was also attended by HRH Prince Raad and Prime Minister Samir Rifai, a short documentary on the university was shown, followed by a performance of the AOU anthem by Jordanian singer Omar Abdallat.
The new seven-storey building will accommodate a greater number of students who will also be able to study in accordance with the Open Education System.
The university, established by Prince Talal as an educational non-profit entity, opened in Jordan in 2002. In addition to the Kingdom, the university also has branches in Egypt, Bahrain, Kuwait, Lebanon, Oman and Saudi Arabia, with new campuses expected to open in Palestine and Yemen.
The Jordanian branch has been recently expanded with the opening of educational centres in different governorates across the Kingdom to encourage more students to benefit from its programmes.
The AOU offers degree programmes in English language and literature, computer sciences, business administration and educational studies. The university is accredited with the Ministry of Higher Education and Scientific Research as well as the British Open University.
Since 2002, 3,100 students, many of them women, have graduated from the AOU in Jordan.
