Operating under the overall authority of the Assistant Director-General for External Relations and Public Information(ADG/ERI), the Section of National Commissions for UNESCO and related networks(ERI/NCS/NAC) makes integral part of the Division of National Commissions and Civil society(ERI/NCS).

As the key interface between the global network of National Commissions and the UNESCO Secretariat, the Section is in charge of upstream policy coordination with National Commissions and for the overall monitoring and implementation of UNESCO’s strategy and policies concerning National Commissions.

The Section endeavours to especially focus on the strengthening of the global network of National Commissions and to advocate their active participation in UNESCO’s activities. The Section’s priority activities are centred on the three following major axes:
- Policy and advocacy
- Meetings/Consultations
- Training

With an objective to create effective conditions for the active participation of National Commissions in UNESCO’s activities, the Section cooperates closely with each and every Commission as well as the Coordinating Group of National Commissions.

It also maintains constructive cooperation with the Secretariat’s Programme Sectors and Central Services, as well as UNESCO Field Offices.
