The Republic of Congo hosted the second sub-regional seminar for strengthening African National Commissions in view of their participation in post-conflict reconstruction and peace consolidation in Brazzaville from 29 November to 1 December 2010.

The Republic of Congo hosted the second sub-regional seminar for strengthening African National Commissions in view of their participation in post-conflict reconstruction and peace consolidation in Brazzaville from 29 November to 1 December 2010.

The objective of the seminar was to inform the participants of UNESCO’s role in post-conflict reconstruction process as part of the UN-wide action and to explore, on the basis of existing good practices, what contribution National Commissions can make into such efforts.

The seminar focused especially on the needs and priorities of National Commissions facing difficulties and challenges in post-conflict situations.

The representatives of eleven French-speaking countries in Africa (Burundi, Central African Republic, Comoros, Côte d’Ivoire, Chad, Democratic Republic of Congo, Guinea, Guinea-Bissau, Madagascar, Niger and Republic of Congo) took part in the seminar.

Representatives and experts from the UNESCO Headquarters and the Brazzaville Office as well as the German Commission for UNESCO shared their knowledge and experience on the ways and means of reconstructing and reinforcing educational, scientific and cultural institutions in post-conflict and post disaster countries.

The seminar in Brazzaville was organized within the framework of the “Partnership Programme with African National Commissions for UNESCO”, an extra-budgetary project which is funded by the German Government.

Report of the Seminar (in french)

The Partnership Programme with Africa, which was launched in 2008, has been highly appreciated as a good example of North-South-South cooperation.

Within the project, the first seminar on the involving of National Commissions in post-conflict reconstruction was organized for English-speaking African countries in Nairobi, Kenya, on 15-17 September 2010
