IATT on Education Partnership Meeting on EFA-FTI

From 21-04-2009 to 22-04-2009 (Denmark) 

The UNAIDS Inter-Agency Task Team (IATT) on Education working group supporting the integration of HIV in Education for All Fast Track Initiative (EFA-FTI) processes was present at the recent EFA-FTI Partnership Meeting in Copenhagen, Denmark (20-21 April 2009).

The purpose of the Partnership Meeting is to set the strategic policy direction for FTI and review and address issues affecting progress towards the goal of universal primary education.

Members of the working group, which include the Canadian International Development Agency (CIDA), the U.K’s Department for International Development (DFID), Deutsche Gesellschaft für Technische Zusammenarbeit (GTZ), Irish Aid, and UNESCO, undertook a number of activities at the meeting including:

• Meeting with the EFA-FTI Secretariat to discuss the structural and governance changes underway within EFA-FTI and to identify priority actions for 2009-10.



• Meeting with the team coordinating the mid-term evaluation of EFA-FTI to provide feedback on how HIV has been addressed to-date by the partnership and to make recommendations for further integration of HIV and other equity and inclusion issues. This discussion will be supplemented with written input that pulls together the results of the 2004 and 2006 analyses by the IATT on Education of how HIV has been addressed in education sector plans (ESPs); the joint work with UNGEI (the UN Girls’ Education Initiative) and other partners to develop a tool that would support countries to address equity and inclusion in education sector plans; the experience of promoting the IATT’s mainstreaming toolkit in FTI processes; and other efforts.



• Supporting the delivery of a presentation on the pilot phase of the tool to promote equity and inclusion in ESPs. Cheryl Gregory Faye of the UNGEI Secretariat presented on behalf of the IATT and other partners. Copies of the presentation are available from info-iatt@unesco.org.
