On 26 October 2009, UNESCO held a consultative meeting in North Sudan to pilot test the draft Toolkit on Mainstreaming HIV in Education Sector Responses during Emergencies.

The draft Toolkit has been developed by the Task Team on HIV and Education in Emergencies, which comprises members from the International Network for Education in Emergencies (INEE) and the Inter-Agency Task Team (IATT) on Education (INEE/IATT Task Team on HIV and Education in Emergencies).

It draws from the Toolkit for Mainstreaming HIV and AIDS in the Education Sector and the INEE Minimum Standards Handbook. The primary audience for the toolkit is education and emergency officers.

Initial consultations on the toolkit were conducted at the INEE Global Consultation held in Istanbul in April 2009 and the IATT the Inter-Agency Task Team (IATT) on Education meeting in Limerick in June 2009. These meetings provided valuable feedback for strengthening the Toolkit.

UNESCO, UNICEF and UNHCR are piloting the toolkit in selected countries, including Sudan, to make it more field-friendly.

The consultation was carried out in collaboration with the Sudanese National AIDS Control Programme, the Ministry of Education, UNICEF and UNHCR.

Participants involved in the consultation were from 3 Darfur States, 4 Eastern Sudan States, as well as representatives from NGOs, Ministry of General Education, Ministry of Higher Education, and the Ministry of Humanitarian Affairs.

The UNESCO Country Office in Sudan reported that the extensive consultation was successful and the feedback provided will be useful to further refine the toolkit.
