World AIDS Day 2009 – UNESCO’s activities worldwide

From 30-11-2009 to 10-12-2009 (Global) 

UNESCO offices around the world will organize a wide range of activities, building on the theme of ‘Universal Access and Human Rights’ and the Organization's longstanding work on HIV and AIDS. These include:

UNESCO Almaty
In Kazakhstan, UNESCO will collaborate with the Kazakhstani Union of People Living with HIV and the Public Union “Superliga KVN” to provide HIV and AIDS awareness sessions.

UNESCO Amman
In Jordan, UNESCO, in collaboration with the Ministry of Education, will organize a morning assembly session in all schools throughout the country to raise awareness about HIV and AIDS among students, teachers and school supervisors. In addition, a national seminar will be held on 1 December 2009 to discuss the education sector’s response to HIV and AIDS. Posters and brochures focusing on "Universal Access and Human Rights" will be distributed throughout the country. UNESCO will also organize an information and sensitisation campaign to raise awareness about HIV prevention and treatment.

UNESCO Bangkok
In Thailand, UNESCO Bangkok will support the "Service Workers in Group" Foundation (SWING) to conduct HIV awareness among male sex workers in Pattaya,Thailand.

UNESCO Beirut
The UNESCO office in Beirut will support World AIDS Day events and activities in Lebanon, as well as in Egypt in partnership with UNESCO Cairo. In Lebanon, the National AIDS Programme, in close collaboration with UNESCO and other UN agencies, is organizing an information and sensitisation campaign. This will include, among other activities, a Press Conference, a Media Kit (posters, billboards calendars, magazines, TV and radio spots), as well as the provision of Voluntary Counselling and Testing (VCT). The aim is to raise awareness on key HIV- and AIDS-related issues.

UNESCO Cairo
In Egypt, the focus will be on raising awareness about people’s right to information and access to prevention, care, support and treatment services. Media channels will be used to expand outreach to the general population and groups key to the dynamics of the epidemic.

UNESCO Hanoi
In Viet Nam, UNESCO Hanoi, in partnership with UNICEF and UNFPA, will support the Ministry of Education and Training to organize a two-day workshop in Lang Son province to discuss the role of the education sector in responding to HIV among ethnic minorities. UNESCO Hanoi will also support the hosting of a television talk show to discuss discrimination of children affected by AIDS in the school setting.

UNESCO Harare
UNESCO Harare is working closely with other United Nations agencies and key partners such as ministries of education, networks of teachers living with HIV, teachers’ unions and development partners to commemorate World AIDS Day 2009 in its cluster countries of Malawi, Zambia and Zimbabwe.

UNESCO Jamaica
In Jamaica, UNESCO, in partnership with the Caribbean Broadcast Media Partnership on HIV/AIDS (CBMP), will launch an interactive learning tool that will be featured on the CBMP’s LIVE UP website (www.iliveup.com). The focus of the new tool will be improve the skills on broadcast media professionals on the design of new and innovative HIV and AIDS learning modules.

UNESCO Malawi
In Malawi, UNESCO is supporting the Malawi National Commission for UNESCO to produce a documentary on human rights and HIV & AIDS. The 30-minute documentary is aimed at promoting equal and universal access to HIV and AIDS treatment among all sections of the population in Malawi. The documentary will be aired on the national broadcaster, the Malawi Broadcasting Corporation (MBC).

UNESCO Moscow
In Russia, UNESCO Moscow will support a media roundtable entitled, “HIV/AIDS in the Mirror of the Media”. A high-level meeting of experts, journalists and decision-makers will be organized on 1 December 2009 in Moscow’s House of Journalists to discuss how to improve media coverage of HIV- and AIDS-related issues to raise awareness and commemorate World AIDS Day. In addition, UNESCO will support the launch of a book entitled, “HIV and AIDS: what can we do about that?” The book, published in 2009 with the support of UNESCO, aims to raise awareness on HIV and AIDS as well as to prevent HIV-related discrimination among teenagers and their parents.

UNESCO New Delhi
In India, UNESCO is organizing meetings between adolescents and relevant government officials to discuss the Adolescence Education Programme (AEP). The meetings will focus on certain states, namely Bihar, Jammu, Kashmir, Madhya Pradesh, Maharashtra, Rajasthan and Uttar Pradesh, and will aim to increase the coverage of AEP.

UNESCO Phnom Penh
In Cambodia, UNESCO Phnom Penh will support the School Health Department of the Ministry of Education, Youth and Sport to organize a World AIDS Day 2009 ceremony at Mongkul Borei High School. Approximately 2,000 school students are expected to participate in the event.

UNESCO Rwanda
In Rwanda, UNESCO, as part of the Joint UN Support Programme, will launch a campaign that will start on World AIDS Day and end on 28 February 2010.

The campaign aims to generate discussion about, and to expand access and use of, condoms. It will emphasise condom use as a dual protection against unintended pregnancies, especially among young people (aged 15-24 years old), and prevention against STIs, including HIV.

The slogan chosen for the campaign is: “It’s my life, my right to protect myself. I use condom”.

The campaign will focus on awareness-raising and sensitisation through mass media, audio-visual and telecommunication (i.e. through air and tv spots, channels such as MTN, Rwandatel and Tigo, SMS media, and billboards). Condoms will be distributed for free, and awareness and advocacy work will be conducted throughout the country.

UNESCO Senegal
In Senegal, UNESCO’s regional office for education in Africa (BREDA) will be supporting a number of World AIDS Day events organized by Senegal’s Comite Regional de Lutte contre le Sida, including visits to two schools with interventions by high-level officials including Senegal’s First Lady, the Minister of Health and Prevention, and the Director of UNAIDS’s Regional Bureau. UNESCO BREDA will participate, along with other UN agencies, in a Family Awareness-Raising Day for UN staff on 5 December.

UNESCO Tashkent
UNESCO Tashkent, as part of the UN Joint Team on AIDS, will participate in a press conference on World AID Day. UNESCO will also participate in a learning session on HIV prevention and drug use issues among the people in “mahallas” (city district quarters). It will also participate in a roundtable on palliative assistance for HIV-positive people.

UNESCO Venezuela
UNESCO International Institute for Higher Education in Latin America and the Caribbean (IESALC), in collaboration with UNAIDS and UNIFEM, is supporting a campaign, “United to end violence against women and prevent HIV”. Over a period of 16 days, students, civil society partners, and the general public will have the opportunity to participate in discussion for a and attend film screenings and workshops on these thematic issues. L’Oreal Venezuela is also partnering in these activities through its HAIRDRESSERS against AIDS programme. For a complete list of events, visit www.iesalc.unesco.org.ve

UNESCO Zambia
In Zambia, UNESCO will support the Ministry of Education’s efforts to disseminate information on HIV and AIDS.

UNESCO Zimbabwe
In Zimbabwe, the UNESCO office in Harare, in collaboration with the Zimbabwe National Commission for UNESCO and the Ministry of Education, Art, Sports and Culture, will conduct a consultative meeting to assess progress towards establishing a positive teachers’ network.

UNESCO Headquarters
In her first World AIDS Day statement as UNESCO’s Director-General, Ms. Irina Bokova, said it will not be possible to achieve Universal Access without fully respecting the universality of human rights, regardless of a person’s age, sex, ethnicity, occupation, religious beliefs, and sexual orientation, with a particular concern for those most at risk and vulnerable to HIV infection. UNESCO has also worked with the NGO Sidaction and the Mayor of Paris to ensure the participation of the Eiffel Tower in the Light for Rights campaign. The campaign will switch off the lights in major monuments in various cities around the world to dramatize the dimming – and subsequent shining – of the light on human rights.
