The Assistant Director-General for Strategic Planning of UNESCO, Mr Hans d'Orville, participated in the Alliance of Civilizations’ (AoC) first conference to be held in South-East Europe.

The purpose of this meeting was to agree on a Regional Strategy on Intercultural Dialogue and Cooperation in South Eastern Europe.

Read Mr d'Orville's speech here.

Since 2002, with the longstanding engagement of UNESCO, leaders of South East Europe have met annually to demonstrate their commitment to the principles underlying the dialogue among civilizations – understanding, forgiveness, reconciliation, tolerance and respect for the Other – so as to build a more peaceful future.

These annual summit-level meetings result in concrete agreement on the part of the Heads of State and Government of the Countries of South East Europe to move beyond intolerance, misunderstanding and conflict towards cooperation and constructive partnership in the fields of cultural diversity and heritage preservation as the basis for regional cooperation and reconciliation.

Below are the proceedings of the Regional Forums that have taken place annually since 2002:
