STRATEGIC PLANNING

Co-operation between UNESCO and its South East European Member States: A Strategic Approach

A UNESCO Working Document for the High-Level Conference on Strengthening Cooperation in South East Europe, UNESCO Headquarters, Paris, 4 – 5 April 2002

Co-operation between UNESCO and its South East European Member States: A Strategic Approach

This working document summarizes UNESCO’s experience and role in South Eastern Europe and outlines a proposal for future action in the countries concerned. This paper aims to provide greater and better co-ordinated efforts by the Organization with Member States, intergovernmental and nongovernmental organizations: in addition to the projects implemented at country level, a series of regional projects will be implemented.

A set of priority areas for future cooperation in the countries of South East Europe is proposed. The summary descriptions of the 13 project proposals designed to initiate in-depth action can be found at the end of this document. These projects are recommended for implementation by UNESCO in cooperation with a wide range of governmental and non-governmental partners, for a total of approximately $ 8,4 million, to be mobilized from external funding sources.
