 Small Islands Voice

Quick link to this page: www.unesco.org/csi/smis/siv/sivindex.htm

Small Islands Voice is an inter-regional initiative focusing on small islands - both small island developing states, and islands with other affiliations - in the Caribbean, Indian Ocean and Pacific regions.

The goal of this initiative is to ensure the voice of the general public in small islands is heard loud and clear and becomes a driving force for island development. While this is a long-term vision, it is hoped that Small Islands Voice can make a significant contribution to the realization of sustainability and the achievement of sustainable development goals in small islands around the world.

Focusing on Communities in Action, Small Islands Voice works with communities, specific interest groups, and sometimes entire island populations, by building capacity so that islanders can effectively plan and implement their own vision of sustainable island living. Whether it is tackling social issues, sharing island cultures, or embracing environmental stewardship, it is all a vital part of shaping the future. Exchanging these experiences inter-regionally further strengthens a sense of community amongst islands.

Involving young people in determining the future of their islands is another important part of this initiative. Read about some of the youth-led sustainable development activities and see further information about their projects on the website Youth Visioning for Island Living./p>
