General Assembly of the Forum of Asia Pacific Parliamentarians for Education (FASPPED)

From 07-07-2010 to 08-07-2010 (Republic of Indonesia)

Within the framework of UNESCO’s programme for Parliamentarians, initiated in 1994, aiming to ensure that UNESCO’s value and objectives are reflected in national policy making and legislation, the Forum of Asia Pacific Parliamentarians for Education (FASPPED) was established in October 2008.

Following FASPPED’s Executive Bureau meetings (9 June 2009 in Jakarta and 24 May 2010 in Seoul), UNESCO is organizing, in cooperation with the Indonesian House of Representatives, the 1st Session of the General Assembly of FASPPED from 6 to 7 July 2010 in Jakarta, Indonesia.

FASPPED aims to strengthen the commitment of Asia Pacific Parliamentarians towards achieving the Education for All (EFA) goals. This involves both generating greater awareness of educational challenges in the region and associating Parliamentarians more closely with the planning and implementation of educational strategies and legislations.

This first session of the General Assembly intends to bring together the Asia Pacific Parliamentarians to examine and adopt FASPPED’s Action Plan, which will provide guidelines to the concrete actions to be taken in the coming two years, while discussing ways and means of cooperation for the improvement of inclusive educational policies in the face of the emerging economic challenges. The mobilization of financial and human resources to reach the EFA objectives will also be on the agenda.
