Reporting From Within: HIV and AIDS in the South Caucasus – A Manual For Journalists

This manual is designed for journalists who are covering HIV and AIDS in Armenia, Azerbaijan and Georgia. It is intended to strengthen the media’s capacity to address the epidemic in all of its complex dimensions - be they social, economic or political. The manual is the result of recommendations generated from research in the three countries that identified the need to strengthen media coverage on HIV and AIDS in the region.

In Armenia, Azerbaijan and Georgia, where rates of HIV transmission have risen over the past decade, an increase in coverage on the epidemic with a more considered and informed approach to reporting is needed.

The epidemic is too often presented as a medical issue only, with much of the coverage failing to recognise how social, cultural, economic and political factors impact the transmission and prevention of HIV as well as the care of people living with the virus. This manual provides an introduction to particular methods of investigation stressing broad principles of professional ethics to produce more in-depth, accurate and diversified reporting.
