2010 Global Action Week (GAW) on Education For All (EFA)

Every year, the International Global Action Week (GAW) is used by UNESCO and partners as an opportunity to galvanize support for the achievement of the six Education For All (EFA) goals. This year’s theme focused on “financing quality public education: a right for all”.

Guttman.jpg As part of the International Global Action Week (GAW) on Education For All (EFA) and the 1 Goal Campaign, UNESCO Windhoek Office has supported national celebrations for EFA GAW 2010 including country launches of the EFA GMR 2010 in Windhoek Cluster countries, thereby generating renewed national commitment on EFA goals and on financing for quality public education in Cluster countries (Angola, Lesotho, Namibia, South Africa and Swaziland).

In Angola, the Global Action Week on EFA was organized by the Angola National Commission for UNESCO and took place in the form of a march and a workshop on the week of 19-23 April 2010. It was the 1st time Angola organized an event of such size and UNESCO Windhoek Office contributed with the provision of 50 copies of the 2010 Global Monitoring Report (GMR) on EFA, both in English and French. During the event, T-Shirts with the topic for this year’s Global Action Week were distributed, and the Secretary General of the Angola National Commission for UNESCO, as well as the national EFA Coordinator at the Ministry of Education (MED), addressed the participants.

In Lesotho, a two-days meeting for education providers and major target groups (out-of-school children, street children, sex workers, domestic workers and herd boys) was held on 5-6 August 2010, in order to popularize the 1 Goal campaign. The expected outcome of this event was a list of recommendations to be submitted to politicians on how EFA and 1 Goal could be achieved together by all. UNESCO Windhoek Office supported the hall hire and the logistics and accommodation for the participants. During the event, copies of the EFA Global Monitoring Report 2010 were distributed, and a representative of the Lesotho National Commission for UNESCO addressed the participants.

In Namibia, the Directorate of Programme and Quality Assurance (PQA) under the Ministry of Education planned the 2010 Global Action Week on EFA in order to raise awareness and understanding of the importance of financing education, as well as to promote equity and equitable distribution of resources, leading to quality education for all. The Global Action Week took place during the week of 19-23 July 2010, and the official launch was in Karas Region on 19 July 2010. This activity consisted of a march, a drama role play, songs of chosen topics, speeches by invited guest speakers, exhibition of posters, banners and pamphlets. Furthermore, the Global Action Week was launched country-wide through the distribution of posters and banners related to this year’s theme in all regions. UNESCO Windhoek Office supported the production and distribution of pull-up banners, posters, pamphlets and T-shirts all carrying slogans about Education for All and the topic for this year’s Global Action Week: “Financing Quality Public Education: A Right for All”, and, during the main event, the Director of the UNESCO Windhoek Office addressed the participants.

In South Africa, the Education Sector Committee of the South African National Commission for UNESCO launched the EFA Global Monitoring Report (GMR) 2010 in order to bring attention to the EFA goals through a big civil society march and meeting, on 10 June 2010. This activity was organized by the Global Campaign for Education (CGE), in partnership with a coalition of education stakeholders, including teacher unions, student organizations, the South African Council of Churches, School Governing Body associations, the Public Participation in Education Network (PPEN) and local NGOs. UNESCO Office Windhoek supported the transportation of the participants from their respective townships around Johannesburg and Pretoria to the venue of the march and meeting, and, during the meeting, the Director of the UNESCO Windhoek Office addressed the participants on the report.

In Swaziland, the Swaziland National Commission for UNESCO organized the 2010 Global Action Week on EFA in the form of an EFA Awareness Raising Campaign in order to raise EFA awareness to the public, to highlight challenges faced in EFA implementation in the country and to open room for possible partnership opportunities between stakeholders for EFA rollout. The Global Action Week took place during the week of 2-6 August 2010, and the main activity was a symposium where the Government of Swaziland presented a report on the status of EFA in Swaziland in 2010 and on the current status of Free Primary Education. UNESCO Windhoek Office supported the printing of T-shirts, the venue rentals and the entertainment for the symposium, and, during the event, a representative of the Swaziland National Commission for UNESCO addressed the participants.
