State of press freedom the theme of UNESCO symposium and conference
The status of press freedom worldwide, freedom of expression on the internet and the safety of journalists are the focus of an international symposium to be held on 26 January at UNESCO in Paris (Room II). The following day, 27 January, a conference on “Journalism ethics and self-regulation in Europe: New media, old dilemmas” will also highlight media issues, notably the challenges specific to emerging democracies and those posed by the internet and new technologies (Room IV).
Accessing government public information through community libraries in Namibia
The first phase of the pilot project, Access to Government Public Information through Community Libraries, has been concluded in Namibia. This project is being implemented by the National Archives of Namibia under its mandate to preserve all government publications, in collaboration with the Namibia Library and Information Council (NLIC), and UNESCO.
Journalists propose to increase media contents for vulnerable groups
The Latin-American Information Agency (ALAI), with the support of UNESCO’s Quito Office, hosted the international seminar, Towards the Construction of a Democratic Agenda in Communication, in Quito (Ecuador) from 13 to 15 December 2010.
Omar Bongo University launches department of communication
After almost three years of UNESCO’s support, the Omar Bongo University (Libreville, Gabon) officially launched on 10 January 2011 the Department of Information and Communication Sciences (Département des sciences de l’information et de la communication, DSIC).
UNESCO Director-General deplores killing of Chinese journalist Sun Hongjie
The Director General of UNESCO, Irina Bokova, has urged Chinese authorities to fully investigate the beating and subsequent death of Chinese journalist Sun Hongjie. He died in a hospital in Kuitun, a city in the northwestern province of Xinjiang, on 28 December 2010, 10 days after being beaten by several men at a construction site.
Women and media in the Maghreb: UNESCO launches logo contest
UNESCO’s Office in Rabat launches a logo contest on the theme “Women and media in the Maghreb”. The winning logo will be used on Facebook pages of the project, which aims to improve women’s image and to reduce stereotyping in the Maghreb media. Professional graphic designers, artists, students in communication and arts from Maghreb countries are invited to submit their logos to the UNESCO Rabat Office before 13 February 2011.
Call for nominations: UNESCO/Jikji Memory of the World Prize
UNESCO is inviting nominations for the fourth award of the UNESCO/Jikji Memory of the World Prize. This invitation is extended to all Member States, in consultation with their National Commissions, as well as to international non-governmental organizations (NGOs) maintaining official relations with UNESCO and whose work is in the field of preservation and conservation of documentary heritage.
