    On 7 and 8 March 2011 UNESCO’s Cairo Office, in partnership with the Egyptian Journalists Syndicate, organized a training workshop on Self-regulation in the Egyptian Press and the Role of the Newspaper Ombudsman. The two-day workshop aimed at promoting the theory and the practice of self-regulation among Egyptian journalists.

    IPDC Bureau allocates over US$ 2,3 million to 93 media development projects
    Ninety-three projects aimed at expanding opportunities for free, independent and pluralistic media in developing countries worldwide have received funding at the 55th annual meeting of the Bureau of the International Programme for the Development of Communication (IPDC), which took place at UNESCO Headquarters in Paris from 22 to 24 March. A total of more than US$ 2,3 million was allocated to these projects, which will be implemented in 65 countries.

    The UNESCO Office in Brasilia, in partnership with Ford Foundation, launches today three studies about the Brazilian media system. The papers aim to contribute to the ongoing debate in the Brazilian society about the role of the communications industry in strengthening democracy in the country. Compared regulatory law and practices, freedom of expression and self-regulation are the central components of the three most recent volumes of the Communication and Information Debates Series.

    The UNESCO Office in Bangkok has created two CD-ROMs containing e-learning tools, which are both useful for instructed and self-learning. Collected by a team from the ICT in Education Programme, the e-learning tools can be installed directly from the CD-ROM on any computer using the Windows operating system.

    A one-day seminar on open access will take place on 16 March 2011 at the India International Centre, New Delhi. Organized by UNESCO jointly with the Centre for Internet and Society (Bangalore, Karnataka), the event aims to initiate a sub-regional dialogue on democratizing access to scientific and health-related information, the economics of scientific publishing, the implications of the various open-access models and the copyright and intellectual property issues.

The training on conflict-sensitive reporting aimed to equip media practitioners with specific skills and techniques regarded as essential in analyzing conflict and post-conflict issues in Southern Sudan.

    In January 2011 the UNESCO Office in Cairo, in cooperation with the Cairo University, has launched a project to strengthen journalism education and communication research in Egypt. This initiative aims at reforming the curriculum of the Faculty of Communication at the Cairo University, the leading higher education institution in Egypt, as well as at providing recommendations to other journalism schools of the country, in line with the standards outlined in UNESCO’s Model Curricula for Journalism Education.

    Launched annually on the occasion of International Women’s Day (8 March), Women Make the News (WMN) is a global initiative aimed at promoting gender equality in the media.     “I am Africa. This is My Story…”: Power of Peace Network supports digital storytelling contest
    An African continent-wide digital storytelling contest on YouTube, entitled “I am Africa. This is My Story…”, will be launched on 1 March 2011 by Chrysalis Campaign, Inc. (USA) and ZAA-ICT, a Southern Africa Telecentre Network supported by UNESCO’s Power of Peace Network (PPN). The contest calls on African native youth, between the ages of 14 and 35, to team up with press, schools, cyber cafes, NGOs, missions and youth agencies to produce three-minute YouTube digital stories.

    Beyond OER: OPAL Report 2011 released
    The Open Educational Quality Initiative (OPAL) releases its Report 2011, entitled Beyond OER: Shifting Focus to Open Educational Practices. Among its conclusions is the fact that Open Educational Resources (OER) are more widely used where programmes or initiatives for open resources exist at the institutional level. The lesser the fear, insecurity or discomfort towards OER, the higher the frequency of their use. The report advocates building trust in OER in order to increase their actual usage and to build open learning architectures to transform learning.
